What is ABA therapy?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a personalized, evidence-based approach to helping children build meaningful life skills. At its core, ABA is about understanding why behaviors happen and using positive, respectful strategies to teach new skills that support independence, communication, and confidence. At Believing is Achieving, ABA is never rigid or robotic. Therapy is individualized, relationship-based, and designed to work within your child's real life — not to force your child to fit a system.

Understanding why behaviors happen

The part of ABA that most parents have never had explained to them is that it starts with a question rather than a correction. Behavior serves a purpose for a child. It gets something, avoids something, or communicates a need that the child does not yet have another way to express. ABA works by understanding that purpose first, then teaching a skill that meets the same need in a way that works better for your child and your family.

That is why the same diagnosis produces very different programs. A child working toward first words, a child working toward getting dressed independently, and a child working toward playing alongside a sibling are all doing ABA, and none of their sessions look alike.

What this looks like in practice

Sessions are engaging, interactive, and centered on building trust and confidence. Therapy often includes play-based learning, practicing communication and social skills, working on daily routines, and natural teaching within your home environment. Nothing about it is rigid or robotic.

Because Believing is Achieving delivers therapy only in the home, teaching happens inside the routines the skill actually belongs to. Getting dressed is practiced in your child's bedroom in the morning. Asking for a snack is practiced in your kitchen. A transition away from a screen is practiced on your couch, with the real screen and the real sibling in the room. Skills practiced in real routines are the skills that stick.

What ABA is not

ABA is not a script applied identically to every child, and it is not compliance training. At Believing is Achieving, therapy is individualized, relationship-based, and designed to work within your child's real life — not to force your child to fit a system. Strategies are positive and respectful, and they are explained to you rather than applied behind a closed door.

Who delivers it

A Board Certified Behavior Analyst assesses your child, designs the program, and oversees it. A Registered Behavior Technician runs the sessions with your child. Parents are essential partners in that work: we provide ongoing coaching so strategies fit naturally into your routines, and you are never expected to be the expert.
