Does Aetna Cover ABA Therapy in Illinois?

The short answer: Usually, yes. We are in-network with Aetna, which means Chicagoland families with a covered Aetna plan and an autism diagnosis can start in-home ABA with us at in-network rates. Specific benefits differ from plan to plan, and we verify yours at no cost to your family.

The Illinois mandate, starting with the age limit

The clause parents ask us about most often with Aetna is age. Illinois' autism insurance law, Public Law 095-1005, applies to individuals under age 21, which is a longer runway than many families expect. Coverage does not end when a child starts school, and it does not end in early adolescence. Families who assumed ABA was an early-childhood benefit often find they still have years of coverage available (Autism Speaks).

Within that age window, the law requires state-regulated plans to cover the diagnosis and treatment of autism spectrum disorders, including habilitative and rehabilitative care such as Applied Behavior Analysis, subject to a maximum annual benefit of $36,000. It was enacted in 2008, took effect December 12, 2008, and covers state employee health plans, individual plans, and fully insured large and small group plans. A 2022 amendment confirmed that insurers may not deny covered services because of the setting in which they are provided, home-based services included.

Aetna also administers self-funded employer plans, which fall under federal ERISA rules rather than the Illinois mandate. Plenty of those plans cover ABA anyway. The state requirement simply is not what compels it, so the plan document is what we read.

How authorization works with Aetna

We begin with a benefits check before your assessment, so you know where you stand early. After the in-home assessment, your BCBA prepares a treatment plan with individualized goals and a recommended level of service, and we submit it to Aetna for authorization. We track the review, answer any clinical questions the plan raises, and tell you when it is approved. Re-authorizations happen on the plan's schedule as your child's goals are updated, and we manage those as well.

What varies by plan

Two families can both hold an Aetna card and have quite different behavioral health benefits: different cost sharing, different referral or prior-authorization rules, different provider network tiers, and the state-regulated versus self-funded distinction above. We will not guess at numbers or timelines on your behalf. We call the plan, read the benefit, and report back honestly — at no cost, whether or not you become a client.

Usually, yes. Believing is Achieving is in-network with Aetna, and Illinois law requires state-regulated plans to cover autism diagnosis and treatment including ABA for individuals under age 21. The details of your particular Aetna plan decide the rest, and we confirm them at no cost.

Will Aetna cover ABA therapy delivered at home?

Home-based ABA is not treated as a lesser setting under Illinois law. A 2022 amendment clarified that insurers may not deny covered services because of where they are provided, naming home-based services alongside clinic-based ones. Every one of our sessions happens in the family home.

What is the age limit for Aetna ABA coverage in Illinois?

The Illinois autism insurance mandate applies to individuals under age 21 on state-regulated plans. If your child is approaching that age, tell us early. We will read your plan carefully and explain what the transition looks like rather than letting a benefit lapse quietly.
