How many hours of ABA therapy does my child need?
There is no standard number. We never recommend excessive therapy simply because insurance allows it. Recommendations are based on your child's needs, your family's capacity, and what is realistic and sustainable. Your wishes always matter in that decision.
Why there is no standard number
Hours follow goals. A child working on a small number of specific skills does not need the same schedule as a child whose program spans communication, daily living, safety, and emotional regulation. The assessment is what produces the recommendation: parent interviews, direct observation of your child, skill assessments, and a review of developmental history. Your BCBA reviews the findings with you and explains the reasoning behind the number rather than handing you one.
Capacity is part of the clinical picture
A schedule your family cannot sustain is not a good clinical plan. Recommendations are based on your child's needs, your family's capacity, and what is realistic and sustainable, and your wishes always matter in that decision. Siblings, work schedules, school days, and the other therapies your child already attends are all real constraints, and pretending otherwise produces a plan that quietly falls apart in month three.
Why ownership changes this answer
Authorized hours are revenue. In a practice where growth targets sit above clinical judgment, that creates pressure in exactly one direction. STAT News interviewed more than three dozen families, clinicians, and experts, and parents described being "hounded to bring their kids to more and more therapy" — some pressured toward more than 40 hours a week (STAT News).
Believing is Achieving is owned by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, and the person who signs off on your child's hours is a clinician rather than an investor. We never recommend excessive therapy simply because insurance allows it. Profit is never our priority; progress always is.
Hours can change
The initial recommendation is a starting point, not a contract. Progress is tracked continuously using data collected during sessions, and goals are reviewed and adjusted as your child grows and changes. If the schedule needs to go up, down, or shift to different times of day, that is a conversation, and you can reach our team the same day to start it.
